A small, EF0 tornado touched down in Chilton County very briefly late this morning north of Clanton. There was no warning for this tornado by the National Weather Service, and I wanted to take a minute here and defend them.
*This small spin-up was in a tropical rain band, much like the spiral bands we experience [...]

The August issue of “Smithsonian” magazine came yesterday. That magazine has a long history of publishing prestigious, very interesting and educational articles.
Guess what takes up seven whole pages of this month’s issue? It is a great story that starts on page 28 entitled, “River of Riches.” The subtitle says, “The Cahaba River, an unsung [...]

One of my greatest childhood goals was being on the Cousin Cliff show for my birthday. You see, everyone loved “Cuz”… I mean come on. He showed Three Stooges movies and Popeye cartoons; he had Droodles, talked about Jack’s Hamburgers for 15 cents (that were so good, good, good), and gave away cakes from Marsh [...]

Boy, do I have a rant for the next Weather Brains episode – provided Fay doesn’t interfere with it.
I’ve seen lots of changes in the weather business, many of them quite good. But when I was checking the NWS site at Tallahassee this morning, I could not help but be struck with all of [...]

As of about ten minutes ago, the ABC 33/40 Weather Team became the only known (at least to me) weather department in the country, perhaps the world or even the [...]

Way behind on blog posts this morning as you can tell… scroll down for various picture sets and the morning weather discussion and Weather Xtreme video. I am amazed at the quality of images sent to us by our readers. Great stuff.
I promised a review of the new 2.0 iPhone firmware late last week…
No, I [...]

Seems like I have to write a rebuttal to the Birmingham News just about every Sunday these days.
I don’t have any problem with them; I actually enjoy newspapers, although their business model is dying faster than a meteor streaking through the night (all traditional media is fighting the same problem; disruption from the Internet). [...]

First of all, it is always difficult to find out that someone passed away in a storm, as occurred last night in Leeds. As a meteorologist, it somehow makes it more difficult that it was weather-related.
There has been a lot of talk about last night’s event. The National Weather Service issued [...]

My good friend, Rick Burgess of the Rick and Bubba show, is dealing with a tragedy this morning; his two year son died last night of an accidental drowning.
Pray that God’s spirit would permeate their entire being, and will protect them from questions and doubts in the coming days.
More details on arrangements will be forth [...]
