(SE River Forecast Center)
It’s not like you needed me nor the government to tell you, but the drought is now officially over for practically all of the Southeastern United States. Even in Florida, the drought is mainly gone due to heavy rains last week.

(NOAA)
So far this year, the Birmingham Airport has received 26.55″ of [...]

24 August, 2008 (12:02) | Drought, Forecast Discussion | 5 comments

Fay is the type of system we have been longing for. A slow moving rain maker. Just as long as she doesn’t overdo it.
The Palmer Drought Index is how long term droughts are measured. 0 indicates normal. -2 indicates moderate drought.
Here is the amount of rainfall needed [...]

This very interesting statement from Jason Elliott, forecaster with the NWS/Huntsville. Jason and I both grew up in West Alabama (Fayette and Hale) No kin, but I wish I was.

The Rain Parade

30 July, 2008 (10:44) | Drought, Flooding | 11 comments

According to the latest survey, rain reports are now more popular in Alabama than football scores so here we go with another list.
The storms yesterday dumped rain so fast in some areas that visibility was just a few feet. A lady driving from UAB to Odenville said she could only see about 10 feet at [...]

This Story is All About Rain

26 June, 2008 (09:49) | Drought, Events | 4 comments

Is rain sometimes worth its weight in gold?
Well, maybe not, but sometimes we probably think that way. People in the Midwest would not be willing to pay one cent for any more rain at this time. Ottumwa, Iowa was drenched with an additional 3.17 inches in the last 24 hours and Quincy, Illinois 1 [...]

* 79% is how much of Alabama has adequate top soil moisture, quite a change from a year ago at this time. These numbers courtesy the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Alabama Field Office, Montgomery, released this afternoon. They issue a Crop Progress and Condition Report each Monday afternoon.
* 2% is all of the state [...]

Do U Want More Rain Reports?

16 May, 2008 (12:25) | Drought, Flooding | 3 comments

Are you sure? I feel like you may be bug-eyed from reading the extremely long list last night–the most we have ever posted at one time. But, since the last 24 hours has been one of the biggest drought fighters so far, we list some additional reports that came in this morning and some that [...]

Classic Example of a Soaker

15 May, 2008 (20:15) | Drought | 6 comments

I have an idea that today’s widespread rain event was the biggest one since Hurricane Ivan wet down the state. Cannot be sure about that, but today was truly a red letter day for us.
Please remember that we get more than one report from some locations. I have tried to look back through all [...]

What a Difference a Year Makes

15 May, 2008 (18:46) | Drought | 4 comments

A year ago today, Birmingham Airport had received a mere 9.68 inches of rain and we were showing a deficit of over 13 inches!
By this afternoon, Birmingham had received 1.82 inches from today’s storms bringing our 2008 total to 24.70, a SURPLUS of 1.87. (We can finalize those numbers later this evening when final totals [...]

Rain Always Welcome!

28 April, 2008 (12:05) | Drought | 3 comments

Lots of interesting material on the blog this morning. Goldwing Dave needs about five more dogs and three more cats. Maybe a pet snake.
But let me intrude with this list of rain amounts. Normally we would not post a list this long but everyone in Alabama is “drought-aware” and would like to know how much [...]
