In Focus–Historic September Heat

2 September, 2009 (10:33) | Heat | 5 comments

Autumn is here and we are experiencing some very comfortable temperatures. We have heard zero complaints.
But we (must) (should) (sorta) keep in mind that we can have some scorching heat in September. The subject of this story is the historic heat of September, 1925, only to come back again in September, 1927 for a repeat [...]

The Tragic Death of Corey Stringer

1 August, 2009 (22:32) | Heat, Weather History | No comments

Temperatures at the Minnesota Vikings training camp in Mankato, Minnesota were in the 90s and humidities were very high during the first week of August 2001 The heat and humidity were combining to create stifling conditions with heat indices in the 110 degree range. The National Weather Service had issued heat advisories for [...]

Seattle Cooking

29 July, 2009 (17:55) | Heat | 1 comment

At 5 o’clock this afternoon, Alabama time and 3 pm Pacific time, the temperature at Seattle/Tacoma Airport was 101. This is the hottest weather ever for Seattle and that 101 may not be the final high.
It was 104 at the same time in Portland. That city has skirted with 106 and 107 last couple of [...]

* Thanks to David Reimer for relaying information that the temperature actually reached a high of 117 at Alva, Oklahoma yesterday (Friday) That is one degree hotter than the reported national high of 116 in Death Valley. It is also two degrees hotter than the 115 a couple of days ago at Buffalo, Oklahoma, which, [...]

Another “Blast Furnace” Afternoon

10 July, 2009 (17:53) | Heat | 3 comments

Well, of course, not really like standing in the door of a blast furnace but these reports can make you want a lot of water often.
We have not received a report from Buffalo, Okla., this afternoon, but yesterday, they had a high of 115–the hottest temperature in Oklahoma in 13 years. Here are some spot [...]

More About Buffalo

9 July, 2009 (21:17) | Heat | 4 comments

The high temperature of 115 this afternoon in Buffalo, Okla., is the hottest temperature recorded anywhere in Oklahoma in 13 years!
Buffalo is in far NW Oklahoma (but still not in the Panhandle) at the junction of US 64 and US 183.
It was also a windy afternoon.
We hope that is not a bad omen for the [...]

A Hot Blast

9 July, 2009 (19:04) | Heat | 7 comments

Consider these late afternoon temperatures that were accompanied by strong south winds gusting between 30-40 mph in many areas. Not exactly like standing in the door of a blast furnace, but this will dehydrate you in a hurry.
I stopped for gasoline once on U.S. 66 in the Texas Panhandle east of Amarillo. Temperature was 105 [...]

Month of May Can Be Hot

20 May, 2008 (08:19) | Climate, Heat | 14 comments

Not this year. We have been lucky, although it is heating up somewhat now.
We can have some significant heat in Central Alabama even before the official arrival of summer. The month of May, 1962, is a marked example:
….16 of the 31 record highs at Birmingham for the month of May occurred in 1962.
….The high was [...]
