An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

BRING ON THE WEEKEND: Our weather won’t change much tomorrow as we kick off the weekend; the sky will be generally sunny with a high in the 77-80 degree range for most of Alabama. We do note the GFS is a little more aggressive with moisture return Sunday, and we most likely will need to mention an outside risk of a shower Sunday afternoon over the southern two-thirds of the state. But, the moisture will be very shallow, and most places will remain dry.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Another great night for the games tonight; the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from the 70s at kickoff into the 60s during the second half.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SATURDAY: The weather has really cooperated with football games around this part of the country so far this season, and the nice, quiet game-day weather continues this weekend! Tomorrow’s early game is at Legion Field where Mississippi State plays UAB at 11 AM. It will be sunny with temperatures in the middle and upper 70s throughout the game. Auburn is at Arkansas tomorrow evening at 6 PM and with a clear sky, temperatures will fall from the 70s at kickoff to the 60s in the fourth quarter. It’s homecoming for Alabama as they take on Vanderbilt, and it will be another nice night at Bryant-Denny! Temperatures will fall from the mid-70s at kick off to the mid-60s by the end of the game with a fair sky.

NEXT WEEK: A tropical wave will pass east of Alabama, and the bulk of the big rain will stay close to the South Atlantic Coast. We will mention some risk of isolated showers Monday, but the latest GFS is dry on Tuesday as the wave moves well north of Alabama.

A cold front will pass through Thursday night, but the 12Z GFS is pretty dry; cooler and drier air will follow by Friday and the following weekend. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range details.

TROPICS: Philippe, still a minimal hurricane, is on the way to the North Atlantic as it becomes extra-tropical. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

Walker County Tornado Relief Update

| 9:34 am October 7, 2011 | Comments (0)

Many of you have asked about the status of the house that is being built for a family of 11 near Cordova left homeless by the April 27 tornado outbreak. The update below is from Lori Abercrombie with the Mission of Hope, who is coordinating the project…

The Adams project is moving along, however the weather is much cooler and the need for the family to get in the house is urgent, we must move quickly. As I turned my heat on this morning my mind went to the Adams, are they warm? 10 people in a run down wind-stream trailer is not good. Please see the list of needs and plug in.

We need insulation very quickly. $1,800.00
HVAC $6,200.00
Cabinets and shelving $6,000.00
Paint $1,500.00 25 gals. includes paint & primer
Laminate Flooring $2,500.00

AUX has agreed to do the plumbing and electrical. We are waiting to hear from them and waiting for them to work us in their schedule. Pray that it happens soon.

Extras would include furnishings and excavating.

I shot the video below a few weeks ago….

If you can help, you can contact Lori by email at lori9601@yahoo.com

Thanks for helping our neighbors in need!

Long Dry Spell Continues

| 6:00 am October 7, 2011 | Comments (3)

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

TEN IN A ROW: Today will be the tenth consecutive day with no rain for most of Alabama, as the dry spell rolls along. Really something pretty typical for October, our driest month of the year. Expect a good supply of sunshine today with a high at or just over 80 for most places.

WEEKEND FORECAST: No real change for the weekend. Afternoon temperatures will ease downward just a bit, and the sky will be partly to mostly sunny tomorrow. I do expect a general increase in cloud cover Sunday as moisture increases from the east, and we might even consider some risk of a shower Sunday afternoon over the eastern counties of the state, but most places stay dry.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: More nice weather should keep high school games fair, dry and mild tonight. Temperatures will be pleasant throughout the games; with a mostly clear sky, it will start off in the lower 70s, and temperatures will fall into the middle/upper 60s by the fourth quarter.

Tomorrow, Alabama will host Vanderbilt at 6:00 p.m. for the Tide’s homecoming. The sky will be mostly clear, with a kickoff temperature near 76 degrees, falling into the mid 60s by the final whistle. Auburn is on the road; the Tigers take on Arkansas tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Again, the weather looks great with a clear sky with temperatures falling from near 78 at kickoff into the upper 60s by the end of the game. UAB hosts Mississippi State at Legion Field in Birmingham at 11:00 tomorrow morning… expect a sunny sky during the game with temperatures rising from around 74 at kickoff into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter. There is no chance of rain.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS and the ECMWF are in better agreement about our weather next week, and both models are looking pretty dry. The weak wave moving north/northeast from the Florida peninsula looks like it will stay east of Alabama, with only a slim risk of any one spot getting a shower here Monday and Tuesday. Then, we need to mention a chance of showers late Thursday or Thursday night with a passing cold front; there might even be a thunderstorm along that front in spots. Then, a nice surge of cooler and drier air will arrive by Friday and the following weekend. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.

TROPICS: Philippe is still hanging around… in fact it is a hurricane in the Central Atlantic with sustained winds of 90 mph. It is moving out to the North Atlantic, and will become extra-tropical this weekend over the cooler water.
