Storms Building Over Central Alabama

| 2:36 pm April 17, 2012

Showers and storms are increasing in number across Central Alabama in the zone between warmer low level air to the south that has been heated by the sun and cooler air in the cloudy areas to the north.

In addition, a stationary front is lying from northeast to southwest across Central Alabama. This image shows it as a cold front, but it is stationary now.

There is actually decent speed shear in the atmosphere, meaning the storms will have some organization, most likely forming into clusters.

One heavy storm is over western Shelby County right now, west of Alabaster. This storm will lift northward into Jefferson County, remaining west of I-65. The storms have assumed a bit of an easterly component and will impact areas near and just east of I-65 through Birmingham.

There is another decent storm extending from Roebuck up through Center Point into Clay/Chalkville. These cells seem to be building and training ove rthe same areas up highway 75 and some heavy rain could occur here.

The storms are not expected to become severe, but some of them will produce occasionally gusty winds and lightning as well as heavy rain. Wouldn’t be surprised to see a severe thunderstorm warning or two, but the chance is remote.

The SPC says they don’t anticipate needing a severe thunderstorm watch.

Lots of heavy rain over Mississippi where 1-3 inches of rain has fallen today, prompting several flash flood warnings. The rain and storms to the west are being triggered by an approaching upper level disturbance. This activity will push into Alabama through the late afternoon hours. Expect about an inch of rain across Central Alabama through this evening with some locally higher amounts. We can actually use the rain.
