East Alabama Storms Weaker
Storms over East Alabama that were severe earlier have weakened this afternoon, but a couple are still packing a punch.
The one about 10 miles northeast of Alex City is moving toward the town, but it may blow itself out before it gets there since it is moving southwestward slolwy, about 10 mph. Storms to the northwest of it gusted out and sent an outflow boundary southwestward. That mini-cool front triggered a developing heavy shower near Childersburg that will produce lightning shortly.
There are storms over southern Clay County south of Ashland. They are also bubbling southward at about 10 mph. Some more are over southern Tallapoosa County south of Dadeville. Some storms just moved through the Auburn area, but they have weakened.
Alex City was 94F last hour, so they would probably welcome the cooling rush of air from the storm if it were to poop out, or a cooling shower. But be alert to the lightning. It can kill.
All of the storms are capable of deadly lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds.
Isolated East Alabama Storms

RADAR CHECK: As expected, most of Alabama is dry this afternoon, but one or two isolated storms have formed over East Alabama, and they are packing a punch, much like the storm in the Atlanta metro last night. Small hail has been reported in places like Hokes Bluff, Jacksonville, and Anniston from a lone storm that is drifting very slowly to the south. Severe thunderstorm warnings have been required for parts of Calhoun and Talladega Counties. This storm is along a weak wedge front moving into Alabama from the east.
Away from that storm, it is pretty hot with temperatures generally in the 89 to 92 degree range.
Not much change in the weather tomorrow… you might see a few isolated showers or storms, but most of the state will be dry and warm with a high in the upper 80s.
WEEKEND FORECAST: Look generally dry, with highs in the 86 to 89 degree range Saturday and Sunday. Again, any showers or storms should be few and far between, much like today.
NEXT WEEK: No real change… relatively quiet weather with no sign of any really organized rain.
TROPICS: The GFS continues to suggest a tropical system will begin to form over the Southwest Gulf of Mexico by the middle part of next week. It remains to be seen if that will actually happen, or where it will go. See the afternoon Weather Xtreme video for the maps and ideas.
GULF COAST WEATHER: There will be a few scattered showers and thunderstorms along the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores today and tomorrow with about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine both days. For the weekend and early next week, about 10 hours of sun each day with only a slight risk of a shower or storm. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s, and sea water temperatures are generally in the low 80s.
