Early Afternoon Update

| 1:13 pm August 2, 2012

Showers and thunderstorms continue to develop across much of central Alabama this afternoon. The heaviest storms are in Coosa and Chilton Counties. Another batch of strong storms extends from Shelby County north into Jefferson County, through Downtown Birmingham, up into southern Cullman County. Storms should continue to develop this afternoon. Some could briefly reach severe limits with hail, damaging winds, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning and flash flooding that has occurred already today.

The Flash Flood Warning for Sumter County has been allowed to expire but has been replaced with an Areal Flood Warning that last until 4:00PM. Heavy rainfall over much of the county has caused widespread flooding across the area. Some rainfall estimates are greater than 5-6 inches.
