THIS AFTERNOON: The sky is generally cloudy over Alabama this afternoon with temperatures mostly in the 60s. It is a little cooler over East Alabama, but the wedge is not too pronounced this afternoon.
MILD WEEKEND: Not much change in the overall thinking. The weather will be very mild tomorrow and Sunday with a high in the 70 to 73 degree range. The sky will be cloudy at times, and any showers should be widely spaced.
NEXT WEEK: A cold front will push a band of rain and strong storms through Alabama Monday. New model data continues to show hardly any surface based instability, so severe weather is not expected to be a problem, although some of the storms will produce gusty winds. Rain amounts of about 1/2 inch are expected, but some places over North Alabama could see up to one inch. Temperatures, most likely, won’t get out of the 50s due to the clouds and rain.
MUCH COLDER AIR ARRIVES: Tuesday looks like a raw, cold day. We will have a hard time getting out of the 40s, and a persistent southwest flow aloft over the colder air near the surface should keep the sky cloudy. A few sprinkles are possible, but significant rain is not expected. Then, the sky will clear Wednesday as the upper trough axis finally moves on to the east. Temperatures should be below freezing both Wednesday and Thursday morning.
LONG RANGE: The 12Z GFS shows a setup for strong to severe storms on Saturday December 15… something to keep an eye on in coming days. And, another cold shot shows up in the December 21-24 time frame. Take a few minutes to see the Weather Xtreme video, which has all of the graphics and details. No doubt the latter half of the month will be significantly colder.
