Sunny Saturday Ahead

| 3:16 pm April 12, 2013

**No afternoon Weather Xtreme video today… way too much “catching up” to do after yesterday’s severe weather event**

NWS STORM SURVEY: We first note the NWS Birmingham has identified an EF-2 tornado near Notasulga in Macon County from last night’s storms. More survey results will follow from other Alabama counties.

TONS O’ SUN: As expected, the sky is sunny across Alabama this afternoon; temperatures are generally in the 60s with a refreshing north breeze. Tonight will be clear and cool; most places will see a low between 42 and 46 degrees early tomorrow.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Great weather tomorrow with a sunny sky along with a high in the mid 70s. But, enjoy it while you can since the weather changes Sunday.

New model data suggests clouds return Sunday, with a pretty decent chance of rain by Sunday afternoon. Below is the 12Z high resolution (4km) NAM valid at 1:00 p.m. CT Sunday afternoon…

There is even come hint at thunderstorms over East Alabama. We will certainly be hitting the rain harder in the forecast for Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be warm and unsettled during the first half of the week; highs will be in the low 80s Monday through Wednesday, and with a moist airmass in place we will have the chance of scattered showers or storms each day, primarily during the afternoon and evening hours, during the peak of the daytime heating process.

Storms will be greater in number, and stronger Thursday when a cold front pushes in the state; we will need to monitor that for signs of severe weather in coming days. Below is the 12Z GFS output valid at 1pm Thursday (April 18)

VOODOO LAND: Hints of a late season cold snap later this month… below is the 500 mb flow from the GFS on Saturday April 20…

Odds of frost that late in April are always very small, but just something to keep an eye on.

Sunshine Returns To Alabama

DIFFERENT KIND OF DAY: Drier, cooler air moved into Alabama overnight, and we project delightful weather for Alabama today with ample sunshine along with a high in the upper 60s. We kick off the weekend with another sunny day tomorrow; the high will be in the 72-75 degree range. Just a fantastic day.

MOISTURE RETURNS SUNDAY: Models are coming into better agreement on this… both the GFS and the NAM now show moist air moving back into Alabama late in the weekend, with rain breaking out over the southern counties of the state Sunday morning, and showers moving up into North Alabama by afternoon. We will go ahead and amend our forecast to reflect this; I don’t think the rain will be all that heavy, but no doubt we will need to mention some risk of showers around here Sunday afternoon and into the evening hours. The high Sunday will be in the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: The first half of the week looks warm and humid. While the sun will be out at times, we will also need to mention the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon showers Monday through Wednesday, much like a summer day. The high will be generally in the low 80s.

To the west, we note SPC has a severe weather risk up for parts of TX/OK/AR/LA on days 5/6, which is Tuesday and Wednesday, ahead of a fairly deep upper trough over the Rockies. The GFS shows a batch of strong storms moving into Alabama Thursday afternoon into Thursday night… that will need to be monitored for severe weather potential in coming days. Drier air arrives Friday.
