On May 30, 1948, the Columbia River reclaimed the important war industry city of Vanport, Oregon, destroying ten thousand homes and leaving nineteen thousand people homeless. A total of twenty five people perished in the flood, which gave no warning before inundating the town.

Showers and storms will wind down this evening, but more are possible over the weekend. The best coverage looks like it will be Sunday, with only widely scattered storms on Saturday. The SPC has much of Alabama in a marginal risk category outlook for Sunday. Things look drier for the start of the week.
