Wet Weather Returns To Alabama

| April 13, 2016 @ 6:21 am

AT DAYBREAK: It is a quiet, cool morning across Alabama as the day begins; as cold as 39 degrees up at Fort Payne; most places are in the upper 40s and low 50s. To the west, widespread rain and thunderstorms are over Louisiana, and that big rain mass is moving in our direction.

Rain will increase later today and tonight as a wave of low pressure moves along the stalled front to the south; heaviest rain will be over far South Alabama, where a flash flood watch is in effect for Mobile and Baldwin Counties, westward into the Florida Panhandle.

For North/Central Alabama, we will forecast periods of rain and a few thunderstorms this afternoon, tonight, and tomorrow. There will be some decent breaks in the rain, however, and severe storms are not expected. Rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely, and we won’t get past the mid 60s tomorrow afternoon.

FRIDAY: Cold air damming becomes established; a pattern where colder air drains into Alabama from the east. The day is looking very cool and wet at times; temperatures hold in the 50s all day with some occasional light rain.

SATURDAY: We will need to amend the forecast as the CAD (cold air damming) pattern continues. We will begin the day with a cloudy sky, and even a touch of light rain is possible during the morning hours. Then, we will forecast gradual clearing Saturday afternoon with a high in the mid 60s.

SUNDAY/MONDAY: These two days look delightful, with ample sunshine and afternoon temperatures well into the 70s; some places could touch 80 degrees Monday afternoon.

REST OF NEXT WEEK: Moisture begins to return Tuesday with some risk of a shower by afternoon, and the latter half of the week looks a bit unsettled with a chance of showers, and possibly a thunderstorm. But, no severe weather is expected at this point. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Rain and storms are likely through tomorrow from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores, and the rain could be heavy at times. Lingering showers are possible Friday, but dry weather returns Saturday and Sunday with a good supply of sunshine both days. Highs will be generally in the 70s; See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

HONDA INDY GRAND PRIX OF ALABAMA: The big event at the Barber Motorsports Park is April 22-24… too early for a specific forecast, but the pattern favors mild temperatures. Get ticket information here.
