Up to 15 inches of rain has fallen in areas west and northwest of Houston this morning.

Houston’s Intercontinental Airport had already broken their rainfall record for April 18…by 5:20 a.m.!

And even more amazing: it also established a new monthly record for any date in April!

8.85 inches had fallen at of 5:20 a.m.

9.39 is the current total for the day.

3.91 inches fell between midnight and 1 a.m. with another 3.19 inches between 4 – 5 a.m.

1.03 inches fell in just ELEVEN minutes between 4:34-4:45 a.m.

There are big delays at Intercontinental and Hobby, which of course impacts Birmingham flights as those are Southwest and United hubs.

An additional 3-4 inches of rain is possible today.

My by estimation, the 9.39 represents the second wettest day on history for the Houston area. The 10.34 inches that fell on June 26, 1989 is Houston’s wettest.

Of course, over 36 inches fell across parts of Houston in June 2001 at Tropical Storm Allison stalled over the area. 8.13 inches fell on June 8th that year with another 2.92 inches on June 9th. That was on top of 5.33 on June 5th. The total that month officially in Houston was 19.21 inches.
