RADAR CHECK: There are a few small patches of light rain over West Alabama around sunrise…

Showers will be very isolated today, and many places won’t see a drop. Otherwise, expect a mix of sun and clouds with a high in the low 80s for most communities this afternoon.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Rain chances will rise as the blocked pattern breaks down, and the upper low weakens and lifts out of the Great Plains. Showers are possible tomorrow and tomorrow night, but understand it won’t rain all day, and the rain probably won’t be too heavy. We will maintain the risk of showers and storms into Friday; we note SPC has parts of the state under a “marginal risk” of severe storms…

Instability values do rise Friday, with surface based CAPE values approaching 2,000 j/kg by afternoon. But, upper support is lacking, and wind fields are not especially strong. Main threat from stronger storms will come from small hail and gusty winds.

I should also note models have not been consistent with the timing of the showers Friday, making for a lower confidence forecast. We will keep the risk of showers/storms going through the afternoon hours, but it could very well be the best chance of rain will come during the morning hours from roughly Birmingham north. And, like Thursday, it won’t rain all day. Highs will be in the 75-80 degree range Thursday and Friday afternoon.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Looking fantastic, with sunny warm days and fair pleasant nights. We reach the upper 70s Saturday, followed by low 80s Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: The overall upper air pattern shows an upper ridge across the Deep South, which means we will experience highs in the low to mid 80s each day. Moisture levels will rise, so showers could form by Tuesday and Wednesday, but the ridge means those showers should be pretty scattered, and there won’t be any risk of severe storms. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

HONDA INDY GRAND PRIX OF ALABAMA: Drivers will have to dodge a few showers, and maybe even a thunderstorm on Friday, but the weather could not be better Saturday and Sunday at the Barber Motorsports Park, with sunny days and warm afternoons. Temperatures will reach the upper 70s Saturday, and low 80s Sunday. Get ticket information here.

AT THE BEACH: Dry and pleasant weather continues on the Gulf Coast today from Gulf Shores over to Panama City Beach, but showers and storms are possible tomorrow and Friday. Then, the weekend looks excellent with sunny days and fair nights. Highs will remain mostly in the 70s. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
