Warm, Mostly Dry Again Today

| May 11, 2016 @ 6:12 am

FEELING LIKE SUMMER: The air has a humid feel to it this morning; the dew point at Birmingham is 65 as the day begins with a temperature of 70 degrees. We rise into the mid 80s today with a mix of sun and clouds; a shower is possible, but not likely as most communities will remain dry.

TOMORROW: Not much change during the day. A shower is possible, but not especially likely, and we rise well into the 80s. A cold front will approach tomorrow night with a better chance of a showers or storms; SPC maintains a “marginal risk” of severe storms for about the northern quarter of the state…

A few storms tomorrow night could produce small hail and gusty winds, but the overall threat looks pretty low with the main upper support to the north and marginal wind fields. And, it sure looks like the showers and storms will fizzle out as they move southward, and many places in North/Central Alabama won’t see much rain at all.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: A few showers and strong storms are possible Friday over Southeast Alabama, otherwise delightful weather for the northern and central counties of the state as dry air settles in. Sunny pleasant days, clear cool nights. The high Friday will be close to 80, followed by upper 70s over the weekend. Morning lows will be in the 50s, and the humidity levels will be pretty low.

NEXT WEEK: Moisture levels will rise, but the GFS keeps the main chance of showers and storms a little north of here through the first half of the week. Forecast confidence is not especially high… see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

I should mention those maximum temperatures on the GEFS ensemble seem a little too high; highs will be mostly in the 80s over the next 15 days, with upper 70s this weekend.

AT THE BEACH: Warm and dry again today with a good supply of sunshine, but a few scattered showers and storms are possible tomorrow from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach. Then, expect mostly sunny days and clear nights over the weekend and early next week. Highs will be around 80 on the immediate coast, with mid 80s inland. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 75 degrees. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

REGIONS TRADITION: The Regions Tradition will be held this year at the Greystone Golf and Country Club May 18-22… a very preliminary look suggests there will be some risk of showers Wednesday through Friday (May 18-20), followed by a mostly dry weekend (May 21-22). Highs will be in the 80s. Get more information about the tournament here.
