Storms Tonight; Dry Over The Weekend

| May 20, 2016 @ 3:22 pm

THIS AFTERNOON: A couple of large thunderstorm masses have moved over the Gulf Coast over the past 18 hours, disrupting the flow of moisture up into North and Central Alabama, and producing a rather chaotic wind field across the state. Accordingly, showers so far have been light and scattered. But, showers and storms will increase over the next few hours with the approach of a low pressure wave and upper trough.

SPC has a “marginal risk” of severe storms defined for North Alabama over the next few hours; storms that form will be capable of producing some hail and strong, gusty winds…

Showers and storms this evening will be scattered in nature, so rain amounts will be variable. Average totals will be close to one inch, but some spots will see more, some less. Showers and storms should be mostly over by 10:00 p.m.

THE WEEKEND: We could see a lingering stratus cloud deck tomorrow morning, but the sky becomes partly to mostly by late morning. Sunday will feature sunshine in full force and lower humidity…. the high both days will be pretty close to 80 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like the warmest week so far this year with highs rising into the 87-90 degree range by Wednesday as an upper ridge takes over. There could be a few isolated afternoon showers late in the week, but nothing heavy or widespread. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: After a very stormy day today, expect mostly sunny days and fair nights tomorrow through early next week from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores; great weather for the rest of the Hangout Music Festival after a wet start. Highs on the immediate coast will be close to 80 degrees. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

REGIONS TRADITION: Mostly sunny and warm weather at Greystone tomorrow and Sunday with afternoon highs around 80 degrees. A great weekend for golf. Get more information about the tournament here.

SEC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT: Coming up at the Hoover Met May 24-29… the weather looks pretty good during the tournament; there could be a few isolated afternoon showers toward the end of next week, but nothing widespread. Heat levels crank up with afternoon highs in the 87-90 degree range on most days. Get information about the big event here.
