Dry Air For North Alabama; Colin To The South

| June 6, 2016 @ 6:17 am

EYES ON COLIN: Tropical Storm Colin is in the eastern Gulf of Mexico early this morning, and will bring lots of rain to parts of Florida today and tonight. But, dry air is working into North Alabama, and most communities along and north of I-20 will be dry today with only isolated showers. The high around here today will be in the mid to upper 80s with a partly sunny sky.

By far the best chance of showers and storms across Alabama today will come across the southern half of the state, with the most widespread rain near the southeast tip of the state, where outer bands from Colin will impact places like Dothan, Ozark, and Geneva. Still, the heaviest rain will be southeast of Alabama.

LONG DRY SPELL AHEAD: Dry air takes over, and we will forecast sunny days and fair nights tomorrow through Friday. Very odd not to mention “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms” in June, but you won’t hear it in the forecast on these four days. Slightly cooler air arrives tomorrow night, and we have a chance of reaching the upper 50s early Wednesday and Thursday morning. The high Wednesday will drop back into the mid 80s, but low 90s are likely by Friday as heat levels rise.

HOT WEEKEND: With a building upper ridge, we are expecting the hottest weather so far this year by Saturday and Sunday with mid 90s likely, and maybe even upper 90s in spots. The air stays dry, and we expect a good supply of sunshine both days with little if any risk of a shower.

NEXT WEEK: Moisture levels will creep up, so we will mention the risk of scattered afternoon showers and storms by Tuesday and on through mid-week, but still it doesn’t look like the rain will be especially widespread. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Colin is packing winds of 50 mph early this morning, but it is not expected to become a hurricane due to shear. The center will move into the Florida coast north of Tampa tonight, and the main issue will be heavy rain and potential flooding. Also there is a risk of a few isolated tornadoes over North Florida later today and tonight, where SPC has the standard “slight risk” of severe weather defined.

The upper trough over the eastern U.S. means Colin will move along at a good pace, and weather will improve over Florida during the day tomorrow.

The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Colin will not directly impact the Alabama Gulf Coast, but dangerous rip tides are likely today. Best chance of showers and storms today will be from Pensacola eastward, including Destin and Panama City Beach. But, the rest of the week looks fantastic from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach with sunny days and fair nights. Highs will be in the 80s. The weekend looks mostly dry as well with only isolated showers. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
