Happy Father’s Day to all you dads out there!

We have a special Father’s Day present for you from all of us here in the Weather Department: some beautiful weather for your Sunday afternoon!

This morning’s low clouds are evaporating as air with lower dewpoints are mixing into the area. Temperatures are a few degrees below those of the past few days and a light easterly/southeasterly breeze is making things more comfortable.

Highs this afternoon will be in the middle and upper 80s and dewpoints will be descending into the upper 50s and lower 60s by evening. The chance of rain this afternoon is nearly nil.

RAINFREE INTO THE NEW WORK WEEK: High pressure at the surface over the Mid-Atlantic states this morning will expand southeastward over the next few days, giving us at least three days of fair weather. Today’s highs in the upper 80s will rise as we head toward the new work week, making the 90s by Tuesday and staying on the hot side as the upper ridge over the Southeast builds our way too. Lower and middle 90s will be common.

A FEW STORMS BY MIDWEEK
A few storms will return to the Alabama landscape by Wednesday as we find ourselves on the back side of a big eastern trough. Passing disturbances will brush the state, triggering scattered showers and storms. One round will occur on Wednesday, mainly affecting Northeast Alabama. Another will occur sometime between Friday and the weekend as a frontal system approaches and slows.

TROPICAL DEPRESSION FORMING
A tropical depression appears to be forming over the Bay of Campeche in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico. This system will move into Mexico tonight or tomorrow morning. There is a small chance it could become a tropical storm before it does. If it does, it will be named Danielle.

TROPICAL MISCHIEF TO BEGIN JULY?
An interesting feature has appeared on recent GFS output. A tropical depression forms north of the Yucatan on July 1 and moves slowly north northwest, arriving on the northern Gulf Coast somewhere between Louisiana and Northwest Florida as a strong tropical storm or minimal hurricane on July 3rd. It will be something to watch.
