Sizzling Weather In The Days Ahead

| July 19, 2016 @ 3:28 pm

RADAR CHECK: We have the classic case of random, scattered showers and thunderstorms across Alabama this afternoon… they are drifting to the south…

Heavier storms are producing torrential rain, gusty winds, and very frequent lightning. Like recent days, these will fade away later this evening after the sun goes down. Temperatures are mostly in the low to mid 90s.

REST OF THE WEEK: The long advertised upper ridge will creep into Alabama from the west, meaning rising heat levels, and fewer afternoon showers and thunderstorms. We reach the mid 90s tomorrow, and the high Thursday and Friday will be in the 97 to 100 degree range. The “heat index” will exceed 100 each afternoon… that is the way it feels due to the combination of heat and humidity. Heat advisories will be needed, most likely.

THE WEEKEND: Hot, humid summer weather continues. The high Saturday will hold in that 97-100 degree range, dropping slightly to between 94 and 97 Sunday. Afternoon storms will bring relief to a few scattered spots.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like highs will be generally in the low to mid 90s each day, with the usual risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. A persistence forecast is usually best during late July in Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: A very quiet pattern continues across the Atlantic basin with dry air in place; tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

AT THE BEACH: About 8 to 10 hours of sunshine daily from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores through the weekend, with a passing storm from time to time. High 88-91 on the immediate coast, with mid to upper 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
