Dog Day Afternoon

| August 4, 2016 @ 3:13 pm

NO RISK OF SNOW: Temperatures are mostly in the mid 90s across the great state of Alabama this afternoon as the summer heat rolls along like a twig drifting down a mighty stream. The high has reached 90 degrees or higher on 30 of the last 34 days in Birmingham, and we are in the hottest part of summer based on climatology.

Scattered showers and storms are across Alabama giving some places temporary heat relief…

These will wind down after the sun sets later this evening.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge stays in place, and our weather stays hot, hazy, and humid. Scattered showers and storms remain possible, generally during the afternoon and evening hours, but slightly warmer air aloft means they could be fewer in number tomorrow and Saturday. Highs will remain mostly in the mid 90s.

NEXT WEEK: Still seeing evidence we could see an increase in the number of scattered showers and storms by mid-week with a weak surface low forming across the region providing some low level convergence. Highs could dip into the upper 80s Tuesday and Wednesday. But, the overall pattern won’t change too much. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: We are projecting generally 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily on the coast from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores through the weekend, but a passing thunderstorm is likely from time to time. Storms could be a little more active on the Gulf Coast next week with a weak surface low nearby. Highs in the upper 80s on the immediate coast, with mid 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: Earl is dissipating over southern Mexico this afternoon; the rest of the Atlantic basin for now is quiet.
