Typical Late Summer Weather

| September 13, 2016 @ 6:17 am

SCATTERED AFTERNOON STORMS: Alabama’s weather won’t change much for the rest of the week. An upper ridge stays in place; the surface front that was across the central part of the state yesterday has dissipated. We will forecast partly sunny days along with the daily risk of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms”. Afternoon highs will be generally in the 86 to 90 degree range, and the odds of any one spot getting wet are about one in three.

Of course, the storms that form during the afternoon/evening hours will be random, and no way of knowing in advance exactly when and where they pop up. Pretty classic late summer weather.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The ridge weakens a bit, and with a surface front approaching we figure the coverage of the scattered showers and storms will be a little higher Saturday and Sunday. Not what I would call a “wash out”, but keep in mind a few passing showers or thunderstorms are a pretty good possibility. Otherwise, we will forecast a mix of sun and clouds both days with highs in the 80s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A few storms are possible Friday evening during the first half of the high school games across Alabama; a lightning delay or two is not out of the question. Temperatures will fall from the 80s into the upper 70s.

Auburn will host Texas A&M Saturday evening at Jordan-Hare Stadium (6:30p CT kickoff)… a shower or thunderstorm will be possible during the game with a mostly cloudy sky. Temperatures will fall from near 84 degrees at kickoff, into the upper 70s by the final whistle.

Alabama travels to Oxford to play Ole Miss Saturday (2:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be mostly cloudy, and a passing shower or storm is likely during the game. Temperatures will hover in the mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues the idea of drier air slipping into North Alabama early in the week, with most of the scattered storms moving down into the southern counties. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily on the coast from Panama City Beach to Gulf Shores, with scattered showers and storms possible. Highs in the upper 80s on the immediate coast, with low 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Ian in the Atlantic will stay far from land. A new wave has emerged off the coast of Africa with some potential for slow development in coming days. And, a weak low pressure wave is near West Palm Beach, Florida… this could bring some good rain to the Florida Peninsula through mid-week, but tropical development is not likely.

Over in the western Pacific, Super Tyhpoon Meranti is packing sustained winds of 180 mph, it will clip the southern tip of Taiwan, and then head for China while weakening. A very impressive visible satellite image this morning.
