Warm, Humid, Scattered Storms

| September 13, 2016 @ 3:57 pm

RADAR CHECK: We have the classic case of totally random, scattered showers and storms on a late summer afternoon across Alabama. Some spots getting heavy rain, many spots with nothing….

Showers and storms are moving slowly to the west, and will dissipate after the sun goes down tonight.

REST OF THE WEEK: Not much change; if anything the new model runs were a little drier, but we will still mention “widely scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms” tomorrow through Friday with partly sunny days and a high not too far from 90 degrees. Again, this is pretty standard late summer weather in Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: The coverage of scattered showers and storms should be a little higher Saturday and Sunday as the upper ridge weakens a bit, and a surface front approaches from the north. I certainly wouldn’t call it a “rainy weekend”, but a few passing showers and storms are a pretty good possibility. The sun will be out at times, and highs should be in the 80s both days.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A few storms are possible Friday evening during the first half of the high school games across Alabama; a lightning delay or two is not out of the question. Temperatures will fall from the 80s into the upper 70s.

Auburn will host Texas A&M Saturday evening at Jordan-Hare Stadium (6:30p CT kickoff)… a shower or thunderstorm will be possible during the game with a mostly cloudy sky. Temperatures will fall from near 84 degrees at kickoff, into the upper 70s by the final whistle.

Alabama travels to Oxford to play Ole Miss Saturday (2:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be mostly cloudy, and a passing shower or storm is likely during the game. Temperatures will hover in the mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Drier air should slip into North Alabama early in the week, meaning the best chance of scattered showers and storms should over the southern counties of the state Monday through Wednesday. Highs will be mostly in the mid to upper 80s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: The disturbance near Daytona Beach, Florida has become better organized today, and it looks like a tropical depression could be forming there. NHC tells us they will not initiate advisories this afternoon, but it is possible later tonight or tomorrow if the organization continues to improve. One way or another, the effects will be the same… heavy rain at times for Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia for the rest of the week. Looks like the main impact of this will remain east of Alabama…

Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Ian is in the middle of the Atlantic with 45 mph winds, it is moving northward and is no threat to land. And, a new wave in the far eastern Atlantic could show some slow development in coming days.

AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores with scattered showers and storms around through the weekend. Highs in the upper 80s on the immediate coast, with low 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.
