Showers/Storms Increase Over The Weekend

| September 16, 2016 @ 3:23 pm

RADAR CHECK: All is quiet across Alabama this afternoon; not a drop of rain showing up over the northern half of the state with temperatures in the low to mid 90s. A few showers and storms are over Southwest Alabama; in fact earlier today parts of Mobile and Baldwin Counties were under a flash flood warning.

THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge across the Deep South will weaken a bit, and a surface front will approach. This means a slow increase in the number of scattered showers and thunderstorms. We can’t promise rain for everybody, but most communities stand a good chance of seeing at least one or two decent downpours. Highest coverage of showers tomorrow will be over the western half of the state, and all of Alabama will have scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms Sunday. The sky will be occasionally cloudy, and highs over the weekend will be back in the 80s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Mostly fair weather for the high school games across North/Central Alabama tonight with temperatures falling through the 80s.

Auburn will host Texas A&M tomorrow evening at Jordan-Hare Stadium (6:30p CT kickoff)… a shower or storm is possible during the game, but not especially likely. Temperatures will fall from near 85 degrees at kickoff into the upper 70s by the final whistle.

Alabama travels to Oxford to play Ole Miss tomorrow (2:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be partly sunny, and a passing shower or storm is very possible during the game. Temperatures will hover in the mid to upper 80s, and humidity levels will be high.

NEXT WEEK: Dry air returns Monday, and we expect mostly sunny days and fair nights Monday through Wednesday with highs around 90. A few widely scattered showers are possible later in the week by Thursday and Friday… see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: About 7 to 9 hours of sunshine tomorrow and Sunday on the coast from Gulf Shores over to Panama City Beach with a few scattered storms around. Highs upper 80s on the immediate coast, with low 90s inland. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Julia will loop around in the Atlantic off the South Carolina coast this weekend, is it being sheared and should dissipate early next week. Most of the rain associated with this will remain well offshore.

Tropical Storm Karl in the eastern Atlantic is fighting dry air and shear; if it survives it could become a hurricane by the middle of next week, but it is expected to recurve well before reaching the U.S. mainland.

Former Tropical Storm Ian is now “post tropical” in the North Atlantic.

A new wave is coming off the coast of Africa; some chance of slow development in coming days as it moves west/northwest.

And, a wave in the far western Gulf of Mexico is moving onto the upper Texas coast this evening.
