Highs Drop Into The 70s

| September 29, 2016 @ 6:21 am

VERY DRY PATTERN: Let’s start with the bad news; today will be the 11th consecutive day with no rain for Birmingham (at BHM-Shuttlesworth Airport, where the records are kept), and we see no signifiant chance of rain for the next seven to 10 days. Drought conditions will only deteriorate, and keep in mind October tends to be the driest month of the year.

REFRESHING AIRMASS: An upper low just north of Alabama will send the coolest air so far this season down into the state today. We project highs only in the mid 70s today and tomorrow with sunshine in full supply. Humidity values will be low, and we will be well down in the 50s early tomorrow morning.

THE WEEKEND: Not much change. Sunny pleasant days, clear cool nights. The high Saturday will be in the 77-80 degree range, followed by low 80s Sunday.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looking fantastic for Friday night’s high school games; a clear sky with temperatures falling through the 60s during the games (remember, they were falling through the 80s this past Friday night). Some stadiums will see 50s by the fourth quarter, and a light jacket will be in order.

Alabama will host Kentucky Saturday evening at Bryant-Denny Stadium (6:00p CT kickoff)… the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from 73 at kickoff, into the mid 60s by the fourth quarter.

Auburn hosts Louisiana-Monroe Saturday at Jordan Hare Stadium (2:30p CT kickoff)… expect a sunny sky with a kickoff temperature of 76 degrees…falling into the upper 60s by the final whistle.

NEXT WEEK: Still dry with mostly sunny days; highs will be in the 80s and lows in the upper 50s and low 60s. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days, fair nights on the coast from Panama City Beach to Gulf Shores with only isolated storms; highs will be in the 80s. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

BARBER VINTAGE MOTORCYCLE FESTIVAL: This event runs from Friday October 7 through Sunday October 9 at the Barber Motorsports Park. No real skill in a specific forecast this far out, but October is our driest month of the year, and for now we see nothing to suggest any significant chance of rain event on these three days. Get ticket information right here.

EYES ON MATTHEW: Tropical Storm Matthew, in the eastern Caribbean, is expected to become a hurricane within the next 24 hours. It will take a hard right turn to the north this weekend, and should be over eastern Cuba Monday night of next week.

Odds are very high Matthew will stay well east of the Gulf of Mexico; it remains to be seen if it will move into any part of the U.S. East Coast, or stays offshore. Looks like a close call, and those from the Outer Banks of North Carolina to Cape Cod will need to keep a very close eye on this next week.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
