Dry Weather Continues; Warmer Afternoons Ahead

| October 11, 2016 @ 3:40 pm

DROUGHT WORSENS: Many wildfires continue across Alabama this afternoon; one large one is near U.S. Steel off Tin Mill Road in the far western part of Birmingham, near Fairfield and Pleasant Grove.

Today is the 23rd consecutive day with no measurable rain in Birmingham (based on data from the airport), and we expect dry weather to continue through Friday with sunny days, fair nights, and a slow warming trend. We project highs in the mid 80s by Thursday and Friday, almost 10 degrees above average for mid-October in Alabama. Nights will stay pleasant with lows mostly in the 50s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The 12Z run of the GFS actually suggests a chance of scattered showers Saturday across North/Central Alabama with a weak front just northwest of here, but the reliable European model is bone dry, and we will maintain a dry forecast Saturday and Sunday. Highs 79-83, lows around 60… the sky partly to mostly sunny both days.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear for the high school games Friday night with temperatures falling from the low 70s at kickoff into the mid 60s by the fourth quarter.

Alabama will play at Tennessee in Knoxville Saturday afternoon (2:30p CT kickoff)… expect a cloudy periods with a few scattered showers possible. About 76 at kickoff, falling to near 70 by the final whistle.

Auburn has the week off.

NEXT WEEK: We will maintain a dry forecast Monday and Tuesday; seems like we could have the risk of a few scattered showers over the latter half of the week with a moisture increase, but not the kind of really beneficial, widespread rain we need to make a dent in the drought.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days, fair nights from Gulf Shores to Panama City Beach through the weekend with highs in the 80s. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: Nicole is a hurricane again, and is expected to pass very close to Bermuda Thursday morning, possibly as a major hurricane. From there the system heads out to sea; no impact on the U.S.
