Dusty October Days Continue

| October 12, 2016 @ 6:22 am

STREAK ROLLS ALONG: Today will be the 24th consecutive day with no measurable rain for Birmingham (based on data at the airport), and prospects for beneficial rain remain negligible though early next week. Drought conditions will worsen; avoid outdoor burning and conserve water.

TODAY/TOMORROW: Mostly sunny days, fair nights. The high today will be around 80, rising into the mid 80s tomorrow. And, while we remain warm during the afternoon, we note the coldest air so far this season over the northern states early this morning. Conrad, Montana is at 7 degrees as I write this update. Upper air winds won’t allow that Arctic air in here anytime soon, however.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: A weak surface front will be just northwest of Alabama, and there is a chance a few widely scattered showers could form over the far northern part of the state on these two days. But, moisture will be very limited, and rain amounts, if any, will be light and spotty. Most of the state will stay dry with a partly to mostly sunny sky. The high Friday will be in the mid 80s, followed by low 80s Saturday.

And, Sunday’s weather will remain dry with a good supply of sunshine. The GFS is printing a high of 83 for Birmingham Sunday afternoon.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear for the high school games Friday night with temperatures falling from the mid 70s at kickoff into the upper 60s by the fourth quarter.

Alabama will play at Tennessee in Knoxville Saturday afternoon (2:30p CT kickoff)… expect a cloudy periods with a few scattered showers possible. About 75 degrees at kickoff, falling to near 70 by the final whistle.

Auburn has the week off.

NEXT WEEK: Some hope the upper ridge breaks down a bit, especially toward the end of the week. The GFS hints at a few scattered showers as early as Wednesday, the Euro (ECMWF) suggests a decent chance of showers at the end of the week on Friday. But, this is a drought and sometimes you have to have a “I’ll believe it when I see it” attitude when forecasting weather. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Sunny days, fair nights on the coast from Panama City Beach over to Gulf Shores through early next week with highs in the 80s. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: Nicole should go right over the tiny island of Bermuda tomorrow morning as a category two hurricane, then it moves northeast out to sea… no impact on the U.S. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet for now; hurricane season runs through the end of November.
