Hope For Rain Late Next Week

| October 14, 2016 @ 5:40 am

DROUGHT CONDITIONS CONTINUE: Today will be the 26th consecutive day with no rain for Birmingham and many other communities across North/Central Alabama. We will, however, mention the chance of a shower for the far northwest corner of the state late this afternoon and tonight thanks to a stalled front near Memphis, but even there any rain will be light and spotty and won’t be beneficial.

Otherwise, today will be partly sunny with a high in the mid 80s. The average high for October 14 (for Birmingham) is 76 degrees.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: We will mention isolated showers tomorrow, but the chance of any one spot getting wet is only about one in eight. Otherwise, a mix of sun and clouds tomorrow with a high in the low 80s. Sunday looks dry and warm with ample sunshine, and a high back in the 80-83 degree range.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear for the high school games tonight with temperatures falling from the mid 70s at kickoff into the upper 60s by the fourth quarter.

Alabama will play at Tennessee in Knoxville tomorrow afternoon (2:30p CT kickoff)… expect a cloudy periods with a few light showers possible. About 75 degrees at kickoff, falling to near 70 by the final whistle.

Auburn has the week off.

NEXT WEEK: We will be unseasonably warm for the first half of the week, with mid to upper 80s Monday through Wednesday. But, the upper ridge finally breaks down Thursday and Friday, and with increasing moisture and an approaching front/upper trough, we will forecast a chance of badly needed rain on both days. I don’t think it will be a “drought busting” rain, but amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely, and some spots could see a little more. And, temperatures will be much cooler… most places won’t get out of the cool 60s Friday afternoon. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

NATIONAL SHRIMP FESTIVAL: One of the biggest events of the year is underway at Gulf Shores, and the weather could not be better. Sunny days, fair nights through Sunday with highs in the 80s. See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: Hurricane Nicole, now with 85 mph winds, will become post-tropical over the North Atlantic tonight; the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet. Hurricane season runs through the end of November.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
