Rain So Close, But So Far Away

| October 14, 2016 @ 3:25 pm

RADAR CHECK: We have actually had rain in Alabama today… up in the far northwest corner of the state. Rain came down at Muscle Shoals and Florence this morning for a brief time, but now is limited to far Northwest Lauderdale County…

Otherwise, it is another warm, dry day across Alabama with a partly sunny sky and temperatures generally in the mid 80s.Today is the 26th consecutive day with no rain for Birmingham.

RAIN DEFICITS FOR THE YEAR: Here is a look at the rain deficiency since January 1…

Birmingham 6.58″
Montgomery 6.64″
Huntsville 8.50″
Tuscaloosa 8.81″
Anniston 12.63″

THE WEEKEND: We will mention “isolated” showers across North/Central Alabama tomorrow, but don’t get your hopes up for any real significant rain. The chance of any one spot getting wet is only about one in ten… otherwise the day will feature a mix of sun and clouds with a high in the 81-85 degree range. Sunday looks warm and dry with a similar high.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: A mostly fair sky for the high school games tonight with temperatures falling from the mid 70s at kickoff into the upper 60s by the fourth quarter.

Alabama will play at Tennessee in Knoxville tomorrow afternoon (2:30p CT kickoff)… we have pretty much eliminated the risk of showers now; the sky will be partly sunny with temperatures falling from 78 at kickoff to near 70 by the final whistle.

Auburn has the week off.

NEXT WEEK: The weather will be warm and dry Monday through Wednesday with highs in the mid 80s… maybe upper 80s in spots. But, conditions continue to favor a decent chance of rain at the end of the week as moisture returns, and a surface front gets closer. We also see some evidence that a broad tropical low could move up into Louisiana from the Gulf of Mexico, which would be a best case scenario for Alabama getting some needed rain. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TALLADEGA RACE WEEKEND: A little early for a specific forecast, but it sure looks like rain will be possible on Friday (October 21), and possible Saturday October 22… followed by a drier airmass on Sunday. We will be much more specific in coming days as the event gets closer.

NATIONAL SHRIMP FESTIVAL: Sunny days and fair nights at Gulf Shores through Sunday with highs in the 80s. Perfect weather for the big event… See a very detailed Gulf Coast forecast here.

TROPICS: Hurricane Nicole is becoming “post tropical” in the North Atlantic; the rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
