Drought Conditions Continue To Worsen
RAIN WILL BE HARD TO FIND THROUGH THE END OF THE MONTH: Today is the 36th consecutive day without measurable rain for Birmingham (based on data from the airport), and a severe drought continues across the northern half of Alabama. A no burn ban remains in effect, and water conservation is needed for most systems as prospects for significant rain continue to be pretty much non existent for the next seven days.
We note high cirrus clouds over Alabama this afternoon, but those are at 20,000-25,000 feet, and the low levels are very dry. Temperatures are pretty close to 80 degrees.
REST OF THE WEEK: Expect mostly sunny weather tomorrow and Wednesday with a high at or just over 80 degrees. Thursday will feature a mix of sun and clouds, and we will continue to mention a small risk of a shower with a wave passing north of here, but with hardly any moisture, and little dynamic support, meaningful rain just won’t happen. The high Thursday will drop into the 70s.
Friday will be a sunny day with a high around 80 degrees.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Sunny days, fair nights. The high Saturday will be near 80, falling back into the 70s Sunday. Lows will be in the 50s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: A clear sky for the high school games Friday night with temperatures falling through the 60s.
Auburn is on the road this weekend; they play at Ole Miss in Oxford (6:15p CT kickoff)… the sky will be clear with temperatures falling from near 70 at kickoff into the low 60s by the fourth quarter.
Alabama has the weekend off.
NEXT WEEK: Halloween looks dry and pleasant with a sunny sky; Monday’s high will be in the mid to upper 70s. We will keep an eye on a wave over Texas; hopefully that will bring our next chance of rain in about 12-15 days. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
TROPICS: The Atlantic basin is quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected this week. We note on this date in 2005 Wilma moved into Florida (near Cape Romano) as a category three hurricane, the last major hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. It has now been 4,018 days since a major (category three or higher) hurricane has hit the U.S. coastline.
