October So Far…

| October 26, 2016 @ 8:01 am

There is no doubt this will go down as one of the warmest and driest Octobers on record in Alabama…

There is a very high probability that there will be no measurable rain in Birmingham for the entire month. This has happened only twice on record; in 1901 and 1924.

Here is a list of the driest Octobers on record in Birmingham…

1901 0.00
1924 0.00
2016 (so far) Trace
1938 0.05
1991 0.07
1963 0.11
1978 0.22

Using average high temperature as a metric, it sure looks like 2016 will top the list since we project warm afternoons through early next week…

2016 (so far) 84.2
1919 83.0
1984 82.1
1963 82.1
1941 82.0
1938 80.6
1931 80.5
1998 80.5
2010 80.3
1927 80.3
1947 80.2
1935 80.1

Droughts and heat go hand and hand; temperatures heat easily in dry air and when soil moisture is depleted. Let’s hope rains return in November. Alabama droughts often end with some very active weather.
