A Quick Winter Weather Update At 9:20 AM

| January 6, 2017 @ 9:25 am

It is currently a mostly cloudy day out there across Central Alabama at this time, but we do notice that there are some breaks in the clouds allowing some sun to reach the surface.

Those breaks in the clouds are not helping the temperatures out at all at this point. At 9:15 AM, temperatures are ranging from the mid 20s in the northwestern parts of Central Alabama, to the upper 40s in the extreme southern parts.

Radar at this time is actually pretty quiet across much of the area. A few snowflakes are currently falling over the western parts of Marion County and the northern parts of Lamar County. Rain is currently falling in the counties in the southeastern parts of the area, including the cities of Luverne, Fort Deposit, Autaugaville, and Phenix City. More rain is falling back in southwestern parts of the area, in Marengo county.

Back over in Mississippi, wintry precipitation is showing up over much of the northern half of the state, with rain to the south of that. Mainly snow is falling from Montgomery and Choctaw counties north to the state line, with sleet/freezing rain from there south to the I-20 corridor, and rain south of that. All of this precipitation is making its way eastward, and will be moving into the western sections of the area within the next hour or so.

I believe that the forecast is still right on track from what James posted earlier this morning. The National Weather Service office in Birmingham just launched a balloon so they can investigate the changes in the temperature profile throughout the atmosphere. When those readings come back, we’ll see if any changes will need to be made.
