Three main groupings of thunderstorms tonight over the Deep South and a new one forming over Southeast Mississippi.

One is in eastern Arkansas and northeastern Louisiana. Multiple tornado warnings in effect. It is moving east northeast toward the Mississippi Delta. It should stay to our northwest.

A second grouping of severe storms over Central Mississippi. They extend from Yazoo City to Forest, east of Jackson and back down to Brookhaven. Three tornado warnings in effect on this system along with lots of large hail reports. A tornado is developing long I-20 between Morton and Forest right now. This activity will rotate into West central Alabama before midnight.

A third grouping of thunderstorms is over South Alabama. A tornado warning is in effect for Covington County, including Andalusia. They are lined up generally along US-84 east of I-65. This activity will stay south of I-85.

In between the last two sets, new storms are forming southeast of Hattiesburg in Southeast Mississippi. These storms will rotate up into Southwest Alabama by 10:30 p.m.. and West Central Alabama between then and midnight.

Tornado watches cover the area from southeastern Arkansas to the Alabama/Georgia border now, including a PDS Tornado Watch over Alabama.

Here is the projected HRRR mesoscale model depiction of what the radar might evolve like over the next several hours.

Multiple waves of storms will rotate northeastward across the state through the overnight and again Sunday morning.

Overnight, the greatest threat of severe weather will be south of a line from from York to Demopolis to Marion to Verbena to Dadeville to Lafayette. Numerous potentially severe storms will occur south of a line from Tuscaloosa to Pelham to Wedowee. The rest of North and Central Alabama will experience scattered severe storms. The tornado threat is over the southern area, although we can’t rule out a tornado anywhere south of I-20.
