Midday Nowcast: New Records Ahead

| February 24, 2017 @ 11:52 am

Tons of sun across Alabama today, and this final Friday of February looks and feels more like the final Friday of April. We are going to continue to stay dry today, but we will see rain and storms overnight, and then much cooler weather this weekend.

Temperatures at midday are already into the mid 70s.

These will continue to climb today, and we are looking to set numerous record highs across much of Alabama later today. Upper 70s and lower 80s expected state wide, and some locations in South Alabama could be in the mid 80s later today.

The record high for February 24 for Birmingham is 78° set back in 1930. Just how high with the ole mercury climb today? We will have to see later today what the new record will be, when the daily climate report is released around 5PM, but we think 80° will not be a problem in Birmingham.

Looking at a larger temperature map, not too hard to find the cold front, which will be the culprit for severe storms today across the Ohio Valley.

That front will move through Alabama overnight, and will bring us rain and perhaps a few storms, but looking at the latest outlook from the SPC, severe weather will not be an issue for much of Alabama as the better dynamics remain well to the north with the main low pressure center.

We do note, the “marginal risk” extends into far Northeast Alabama as there could be a few storms with gusty winds move through as the front does, but the overall severe weather threat is very low for Alabama. The rain and storms ahead of the front should arrive in Northwest Alabama just before midnight, rapidly push through, and should be out of Southeast Alabama by 7 or 8AM as the front exits the state

For the weekend, much cooler air arrive as temperatures will drop about 20 degrees tomorrow. Expect highs in the upper 50s despite sunshine in full supply, and a stiff northwest breeze will make it feel colder. A freeze is likely by early Sunday morning with most communities seeing a low between 28 and 32 degrees. Sunday will be another cool, dry day with ample sunshine and a high close to 60 degrees.
