Chilly Night Ahead for Central Alabama

| February 25, 2017 @ 9:10 pm

Current temperatures

It was a cool and breezy day across North and Central Alabama behind an early morning cold front.

Across the Tennessee Valley, highs were in the lower 50s. The I-20 Corridor checked in fairly uniformly around 60F.

Winds were breezy out of the northwest, gusting to 25 mph at times.

Skies cleared fairly quickly, making for a beautiful day if you didn’t mind the cool and windy conditions.

Satellite pictures show clear skies all the way back to Texas. With clear skies tonight, and lightening winds, temperatures will cool to below freezing in areas north of I-20. Middle 30s will prevail across South Central Alabama.

At the surface, high pressure has been sliding to the east of Alabama and our winds will now turn around to the southeast.

Showers will begin to break out Sunday afternoon from eastern Texas into western Tennessee as overrunning begins to produce precipitation. This precipitation will move into Alabama Monday morning. Rain and some elevated thunder will be possible into Friday afternoon and evening.

The Gulf of Mexico will open for business by Monday night and a warm front will come north. Behind the warm front, dewpoints will jump into the lower 60s. This will set the stage for a warm and humid day on Tuesday. A few strong storms could form during the day, as high temperatures climb into the middle 70s.

By Wednesday, a cold front will be approaching from the northwest. A round of showers and storms will move through the state Wednesday evening. Some of these storms could be severe. The SPC has already outlooked the northwestern half of Alabama with a 15% probability outlook on their Day 4 product.
