Cloudy but Mild

| March 5, 2017 @ 6:55 am

Clouds increased rapidly overnight, so the morning temperatures are not nearly as chilly as we saw on Saturday morning. A small upper level disturbance may create a little light rain especially for West Central sections of Alabama today while the rest of us remain mainly dry with only a sprinkle or two to deal with. Clouds today may hold temperatures a little lower than yesterday, but most of us should see highs into the lower half of the 60s.

Clouds will invade the beach areas of Alabama and Northwest Florida today through Tuesday. A passing shower will be possible today with dry weather Monday. Rain and storms return Tuesday and Wednesday, but then dry weather returns through next weekend. Highs will mainly be in the 70s. Click here to see the Beach Forecast Center page. Clouds remain in the picture on Monday as we watch the approach and development of a cold front from a surface low over North Central US. SPC has an area of slight risk for severe storms centered on Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas on Day 2, Monday. Good southerly flow ahead of the approaching front should help push highs near the 70-degree mark. Because of the moist air mass, a passing shower is possible on Monday, but most of us stay dry. Thunderstorms are possible on Tuesday as the front makes it into Central Alabama. SPC has only a marginal risk area along and ahead of the front just to our west. With the major dynamics of this system well north of us, we are likely to see a weakening situation for Central Alabama as the front moves steadily east-southeast. Clouds and storms will keep highs mainly in the 60s.

The big upper trough moves east of us on Wednesday as a surface high settles into the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Temperatures will drop back a little, but there is no evidence of any really cold air. The upper ridge comes back into play late Wednesday and for much of the latter part of the week. By Friday, Saturday, and Sunday there will be some weak disturbances moving through the predominant ridge pattern that will provide enough lift to mention low chances for a passing shower. Temperatures will be on the warm side with highs in the range from upper 60s to middle 70s.

Looking into voodoo country, a strong trough moves across the Mississippi River on the 14th of March providing us with a stormy day on the 13th. A trough digs into the eastern US by the 15th setting up another brief but potentially cold period for a couple of days. There is another trough around the 17th of March and yet another one around the 19th of March. So the active flow appears likely to continue.

James Spann will be back with the next edition of the Weather Xtreme Video on Monday morning. Enjoy the day and Godspeed.
