3/8/2008: Birmingham’s Monster Snowless Streak Finally Ended

On March 8, 2008, it finally snowed in Birmingham. A grand total of one tenth of an inch of snow fell at the Birmingham Airport as part of a general light snow that rather uniformly deposited one inch of snow from Hunstville to Clanton on a Saturday morning.

You have to have one tenth of an inch of snow to call it measurable by definition.

The eight year streak of consecutive days without measurable snow finally came to an end at 2,961 days. Measurable snow did not fall at the Birmingham Airport between January 28, 2000 and March 7, 2008. Although, we did have several trace events officially during that time that yielded some snow in parts of Birmingham, the official readings reflect no snowfall during that long drought.

What really made it significant was that this streak bested the second longest streak (2,225 days) by nearly 750 days! That streak lasted from February 1, 1951 to March 6, 1957.
