Gravity Wave Brings Strong Winds

November 12, 2008, 8:55 pm | James Spann | Forecast Discussion

Lots of reports of high winds across the state during the last two hours; seems like a gravity wave is responsible. Winds gusted to 30 mph at times in a number of locations across Central Alabama along the back edge of a band of light rain moving across the state.

The winds will subside over the next hour or so as the gravity wave moves over into Georgia.

Noticed it around 15:00 at work in Fultondale. Winds were kicking it for a long time. Kept wondering what was causing it with no other known reasons for the day around. Kind of neat now knowing it was caused by a gravity wave that started back in MS around noon time.
