A Few Sunny Locations In Central Alabama At Midday, But Jackets Are Still Needed

Clear skies for some in Central Alabama, with high clouds filtering out some of the sunshine at midday. One thing that you will notice is that the temperatures at this time of the day are running about 8-10 degrees warmer than yesterday. You will still need a jacket outside, but at least it’s not as bone-chilling cold as it was for the last two days. We’ll have even warmer temperatures for Friday, back to where we should be for the middle of March.

Temperatures Across Central Alabama
Temperatures are currently ranging from the mid 40s across the northern parts of the area, to the lower 50s in the south. The warm spot is currently Troy at 52ºF, while the cool spot is Cullman at 43ºF.

Average Temperatures And Records For March 16th
Average daytime high for Birmingham for today is 67ºF, while the average low is 43ºF. The record high was set back in 1982 when the mercury hit an impressive 84ºF. The record low was recorded at 23ºF back in 1916.

For the Rest of Your Thursday
It will be a mix of sun and clouds for the remainder of the afternoon, and you will notice that it will be warmer than at this time yesterday. Afternoon highs will be in the 50s across the area. Temperatures during the overnight hours will be noticeably warmer, as we’ll have a southerly flow across Central Alabama. Skies will be partly cloudy to mostly clear, and lows will be in the mid 30s to the lower 40s.

Sun & Clouds With Warmer Temperatures on Friday
A warming trend to Central Alabama’s weather will continue on Friday, as we’ll have a strengthening southwesterly flow across the area ahead of an approaching front. A mix of sun and clouds can be expected for the day, and afternoon highs will be in the mid 60s to the lower 70s across the area from north to south. Skies will become generally cloudy during the overnight hours, and rain will be likely for the northern half of the area during the pre-dawn hours on Saturday as the front will be moving into the state. Overnight lows will be in the upper 40s to the mid 50s.

Today In Weather History: March 16, 1990
Thunderstorms developing ahead of a cold front produced large hail and damaging winds from northwest Florida to western South Carolina. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 75 mph at Floridatown FL. Sixteen cities across the northeastern quarter of the nation reported record high temperatures for the date. The afternoon high of 78 degrees at Burlington VT smashed their previous record for the date by 23 degrees. New York City reported a record high of 82 degrees.
