Parts of Northern Alabama Under an Enhanced Risk For Severe Storms Tonight

| March 21, 2017 @ 10:31 am

Severe storms are expected today for parts of Northeastern Alabama and Southern Middle Tennessee, with the main threat coming from damaging winds, with a lesser threat for hail. Locations south of a line from Russellville to Cullman to Gadsden may not see much, if any at all.

The Storm Prediction Center has the northeastern corner of the state in an “Enhanced Risk,” with a very small strip to the south of that in the standard “Slight Risk” for severe storms.

Timing will have the MCS (mesoscale convective system) will be moving in from the west-northwest later this evening, and arriving into the state around the 5-6PM time frame and will quickly move through the corner of the state and will be out of here by 8-10PM. A few storms could develop out ahead of the main MCS may be capable of producing large, damaging hail. Good news is that the tornado threat with this system is very low, but remember that straight-line winds can produce just as much damage as a tornado.

We’ll keep you up to date throughout the day leading up to the system arriving. Stay tuned to the Alabama Wx Weather Blog for your up-to-date weather information.
