A Chill In The Air
An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.
TURNING COLDER: While the rain has mostly moved out of Alabama this afternoon, the weather is cold and damp with lingering low clouds and falling temperatures. At 2:00… Haleyville was down to 35 degrees with a chilly north wind at 10 mph. Other observations included 35 at Decatur, 43 at Birmingham, and a balmy 70 at Dothan on the other side of the surface front.
The sky will clear tonight, and we are still looking at dry and cool weather tomorrow and over the weekend. Looks like a high in the upper 40s tomorrow, low 50s Saturday, and back into the upper 40s Sunday as a fresh shot of chilly air drops into Alabama. Early morning temperatures will be at or below freezing.
NEXT WEEK: The GFS continues the idea of a dynamic storm system bringing the potential for beneficial rain to Alabama Tuesday and Tuesday night; the 12Z run keeps the surface low over South Alabama, which would most likely prevent strong thunderstorms, but still setting up the potential for one to two inches of rain. Then, much colder air blows in on the backside of the system Wednesday with some potential for a brief change to snow flurries before the precipitation ends. Certainly looks like the weather will be pretty cold Wednesday and Thursday, but the 12Z run is a little warmer than the 00Z run we showed on the morning Weather Xtreme video.
VOODOO LAND: We continue to note the trend toward a positive NAO and milder temperatures past mid-month, as we look toward Christmas. Not trying to throw water on the idea of a White Christmas, but it doesn’t look good now. The GFS continue to move the primary Polar jet northward as we get deeper into the month. We will see…
WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.
TWITTER: Don’t forget, you can follow our news and weather updates from ABC 33/40 on Twitter here. And, my personal Twitter feed is here if you want to keep up with my adventures in life. Twitter is a short messaging service you can receive via the web, cell phone, or IM.
I had a great time visiting with the 4th graders this morning at Adamsville Elementary School (watch for them on the KIDCAM today at 5:00 on ABC 33/40!), and also seeing everyone at the ground breaking for our annual Habitat for Humanity home that is being built in Wylam. I am about to head out for the annual Hoover Christmas Tree lightning ceremony, where I will be doing the weather live at 5:00 and 6:00. The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…

I did it backwards… I grew up in Canada, so every Christmas was white. Then I moved here, joined the USCG, and spent most of my time in the Caribbean (read: no snow).
Oh well, so long as the animated version of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” keeps coming on, as it did during my childhood, I know Christmas is coming soon.

The thing that really blows my mind, so to speak, is that Christmas in the Australia comes during the early summer! Can you imagine singing carols by the pool?

Hi Julie; I lived in New Zealand for a while as well… in Takapuna, a suburb of Auckland on the North Island. As for your excellent question re: Christmas in the southern hemisphere, check out the link:

Loved the NZ link above; however there is something wrong with celebrating Christmas in shorts and a tanktop.

I see your point… but I think her figure can make a difference.
