LATE REPORT 10:56 PM
WCBI in Columbus reports that they may have picked up power flashes in Starkville due to the intense storms moving into that area. They report that it looks like some of the town may have lost power.

These storms mean business tonight.

At 10:45 p.m. tonight, our area of storms over Central and northeastern Mississippi is indeed accelerating northeast toward Northwest and West Central Alabama.

The line has separated into broken line segments extending from south of Tupelo and west of Columbus MS to Ackerman and Louisville to west of Philadelphia to west of Forest along I-20.

A new severe thunderstorm warning was just posted for Choctaw, Clay, Lowndes and Oktibbeha Counties in Northeast MS, including Columbus and Starkville.

The individual storms are moving northeast at 50-60 mph.

Strong to severe storms will be into Franklin and Colbert Counties by 11:15 p.m.

They will arrive in Lamar County right at 11:30 p.m.

Storms west of Philadelphia will reach Pickens County around midnight.

There have been numerous reports of quarter to half dollar sized hail from Vicksburg to Jackson. Some recent reports:

…1-1.25 inch hail around Brandon at 10 p.m.
…1 inch hail at WLBT just southeast of Jackson at 9:53 p.m.
…1 inch hail in Clinton just before 10 p.m.

A tree was reported down across the Natchez Trace at 9:57 p.m. near Redwater in Leake County.

Damaging winds and hail will be the main threats as these storms get into Alabama. There is also a tornado threat. That tornado threat is small, but not insignificant.

The cloud to ground lightning is incredible with the storms.

Be alert through the night. We will have frequent updates until the storms are in Georgia sometime during the morning.
