Alabama 811 | Know What's Below.

Breezy and Almost Hot

| April 29, 2017 @ 3:34 pm

Much of Alabama and Mississippi were under wind advisories today as the pressure gradient tightens up between the surface high to the east over the Atlantic and the surface low over North Central Texas. Our winds are brisk out of the south at 15-25 mph with higher gusts.

Temperatures this afternoon are mainly in the upper 80s, with a few 90s showing up down south.

RADAR CHECK: We are tracking a few isolated showers/storms across Alabama this afternoon, but these are few and far between, and actually moving rapidly north across the state embedded in the southerly flow.

These will wind down after sunset and another very mild night is ahead, with temperatures not falling far below 70°.

STORMS FOR SUNDAY: Most of the day will be dry, but it will be a warm and windy day, so we may see a few isolated showers. However, thunderstorms will push into Alabama late Sunday ahead of the cold front, and these look to be strong and possibly severe.

Little change in the overall forecast for Sunday. The SPC has the western half of Alabama in the standard “slight risk”, with a “marginal risk” of severe weather for much of the rest of the state, specifically for Sunday night. A line of strong storms will be marching across Mississippi during the day and then head into Alabama. The main window for thunderstorms will come from 6PM Sunday through 6AM Monday.

CAPE and helicity values support the potential for all modes of severe weather. While it looks like we’ll be dealing with a squall line, model soundings suggest the potential for a few tornadoes embedded in the squall line, but the main threat will come from damaging wind gusts. Beneficial rain is expected as well as rain amounts of 1-2 inches are likely tomorrow night.
