Strong Storms Over Central Alabama

| May 20, 2017 @ 3:07 pm

Several strong storms are over Central Alabama at this hour.

One is over northeastern Shelby County, near Chelsea. It is just southeast of Greystone, where the Regions Classic is being held. A good bit of lightning in that storm. It is moving north toward Leeds and Trussville.

Other strong storms are over Calhoun and Talladega Counties, lifting into Etowah County. They are affecting areas from Lincoln to Ragland to Hokes Bluff and will affect Gadsden.

Some of the strongest storms are over Autauga County, near Autaugaville and approaching Prattville. These storms extend into Elmore and Tallapoosa Counties. They will lift northward affecting these counties into Chilton and Coosa Counties over the next hour.

Over West Alabama, the storms have really grown in intensity and coverage over the last 90 minutes. They now cover much of Franklin, Marion, Lamar, western Fayette, Pickens, western Tuscaloosa, Sumter, Greene, Hale and Perry Counties. Storms are increasing around Tuscaloosa now as well. Lots of torrential rains with these storms as well as frequent cloud to ground lightning strikes.

The western Alabama activity will gradually build eastward over the next few hours, reaching the Birmingham area by 6 p.m.
