Late Afternoon Check On Our Weather

| May 21, 2017 @ 3:08 pm

We have a mostly cloudy skies at 3PM across Central Alabama, and radar is clear of any rainfall at this time. Storms are not that far away, as there is currently rain along the Gulf Coast from Mobile back to the west, and up into southwestern Mississippi and across much of Louisiana.

At 3:03PM, temperatures are running in the mid 70s to the mid 80s across Central Alabama. Eufaula is the warm spot at this time at 86 degrees, with Cullman as the cool spot at 76 degrees.

WHAT TO EXPECT FOR THE REST OF YOUR SUNDAY
The latest HRRR model run is trending drier for the remainder of the afternoon and early evening hours, but a few isolated to scattered showers and storms are still possible. Skies will be mostly cloudy, and highs will top out in the upper 70s tot he lower 80s. A front will move through tonight and we may have a few showers or storms as it moves through, but coverage will be scattered at best. Rainfall under any of these could be heavy, as precipitable water will increase to over 1.60 inches. Overnight lows will be in the upper 50s to the upper 60s.

STRONG STORMS COULD BE POSSIBLE MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY
We’ll have a couple of shortwaves move through the area during the next few days… one will move through on late Monday evening and into Tuesday morning, bringing the possibility of some strong to severe storms to the southern parts of Central Alabama. It will be dependent on how far inland the main energy comes. As of now, SPC has a marginal risk for severe storms up for the southwestern part of the state.

The second shortwave will move in and will bring a cold front through the area on Wednesday. At this point, it is too early to tell if there will be a severe threat with this system… shear values, upper-level forcing, and cooling aloft will be impressive for this time of the year, but dewpoints will be pretty low (in the lower 60s) and so will the instability. Throughout these three days, rainfall amounts will total around 1.5 to 3 inches. Highs on Monday will be in the upper 70s to the lower 80s, then will fall back into the 70s for Tuesday and Wednesday.

DRIER AIR AND MODERATING TEMPERATURES TO END THE WEEK
Drier and cooler air will move in for the day on Thursday, with mostly clear skies and highs in the 70s. Temperatures will quickly warm up for Friday and the start of the weekend, with sunny skies. Highs on Friday will be in the upper 70s to the lower 80s, and up into the mid and upper 80s for Saturday.
