A Quick Check Of Our Weather At 5:15 PM

| August 7, 2017 @ 5:18 pm

Radar continues to show moderate to heavy rainfall mainly over the western and southwestern parts of Central Alabama as we have now entered the evening rush hour period. Everyone southwest of Concord and Hueytown, all the way back through Northport, Tuscaloosa, Greensboro, Eutaw, Demopolis, and Livingston, are getting some decent rainfall at this time, with the heaviest of these showers and storms moving into the Concord and Hueytown areas as I type. All of these showers and storms are moving to the northwest.

We have several Areal Flood Advisories in effect over the western part of Central Area, especially over Greene, Sumter, Hale, and Tuscaloosa counties. The one for Central Green and Northwest Sumter counties expires at 6:00 PM, parts of Tuscaloosa, Greene, and Hale counties until 6:30 PM, and the last one for Southwestern Sumter County until 6:45 PM.

We also continue to have parts of Central Alabama in a Marginal Risk for severe storms throughout the rest of this evening and into the late night hours. The main threat will be from damaging downdraft thunderstorm winds, and maybe some small hail. The time frame for strong to severe storms will be from now until 10:00 PM.

I think this will be less of a severe weather threat and more of a heavy rain event where flash flooding could be possible, especially with cells training over the same areas. Some places could receive up to 2-4 inches of rainfall today, while the rest of us get about 1/2-onch to 1-inch totals.

Remember, do not drive or walk into and water covered streets or paths. Turn around, don’t drown. We’ll keep you posted throughout the evening.
