Current precipitation on the left, rainfall totals on the right.

Heavy rain is affecting Central Alabama this morning, from Lamar and Pickens County in the west through Walker, Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, Calhoun and into Cleburne.

The line of heavy showers is pushing slowly to the south, which means some areas will see “lengthy periods of moderate rain and the line slowly sags south but showers move from west to east.

The heaviest rain at 8:17 is in the Birmingham Metro. Over two inches has fallen in western Birmingham around Fairfield, Minor and Sylvan Springs as well as up around Tarrant City and Fultondale. Another inch could fall in the next 45 minutes to one hour around the city of Birmingham.

An Urban and Small Stream Flood Advisory has been issued for central Jefferson County until 9:45 am. Localized flooding possible in poor drainage areas.

Flooding has been reported in Fairfield, along Princeton Avenue in Southwest Birmingham and in Homewood.

Traffic has been a nightmare, as you can imagine, with multiple accidents from folks hydroplaning.
