A Brief Midday Check on Central Alabama’s Weather

| August 16, 2017 @ 1:13 pm

As we are getting close to the 1:00 PM hour, we have a mix of sun and clouds across Central Alabama, and those clouds are not holding the temperature back that much at all. Temperatures are currently ranging from the mid-80s to near 90 degrees throughout the area. Birmingham is currently at 88 degrees, while it is somewhat cooler in Tuscaloosa, at 84 degrees. Eufaula will take the prize for warmest spot in the state at 89 degrees.

Looking at radar, nearly all of Central Alabama is rain free at this time, with the exception of the southwestern corner of the area. A few scattered showers are affecting the towns of Emelle, Gainesville, and Epes in Sumter County, and Pickensville up in Pickens County. These are slowly moving to the east. Most of these are putting down less than 1/4 inch of rainfall, but one or two of these could put down a little more.

For the rest of today, we’ll continue to have partly cloudy skies across the area and developing scattered to numerous afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Afternoon highs will top out in the upper 80s to the lower 90s. For the late night and overnight hours, the shower activity will start to diminish by the time we lose the sunlight and we transpose into the evening hours. We should be almost completely dry by midnight, and skies will be partly cloudy. Lows will be in the mid to upper 70s.

TOMORROW’S WEATHER
The “Dog Days Of Summer” weather pattern has returned to Central Alabama, and for the next few days the forecast will sound pretty repetitive… Hot and humid with some sun and clouds, with scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. As with summertime convective thunderstorms, a few of these could feature gusty winds and very dangerous cloud-to-ground lightning. I do not believe that we’ll have any flash flooding issues but some heavier storms could cause localized ponding on some surfaces. Thursday’s highs will be in the lower to mid-90s.

ACTIVE TROPICS
With Hurricane Gert heading out to sea at this point, our attention now turns to the three disturbances out in the Atlantic. The lead disturbance (Invest 91L) is heading westward, and has a 50% chance of developing into a depression/storm within the next 5 days. We’ll have to keep our eyes on this one to see if it becomes a Gulf storm or if it recurves. The second disturbance (Invest 92L) is still a little disorganized but is expected to slowly strengthen as it moves west-northwest. It also has a 50% chance of tropical depression/storm development within the next 5 days. The third has just emerged off of the African Coast and is expected to have gradual strengthening. It has a 40% chance of tropical depression/storm development within the next 5 days.Stay up-to-date with the latest posts in the Tropical Weather category on the AlabamaWx Weather Blog home page.
