Much of Central Alabama was waking up to clouds and rain this morning. Much of the rain was relatively light with amounts around daybreak running less than a quarter of an inch. And I expect final totals for the area to run in the range from one quarter to about one half inch. The rain should end from the northwest beginning in the late morning. Areas southeast of Birmingham will see the rain end during the early afternoon hours. And temperatures are expected to stay steady and then fall into the 40s for most areas, so most of us have already seen our highs for the day.

Sunday the front should settle south of Montgomery and wash out, so a dry day is in store for Central Alabama with temperatures cool as highs reach to around 50. Monday will also be dry but temperatures should moderate with highs reaching the 60 to 63 range.

Tuesday we see a transition. While the Southeast and Alabama remain under a flattened ridge, the nearly zonal flow will keep the front north of us for several days but dangle rain chances close. Tuesday will probably be dry but as the front inches closer I see better rain chances on Wednesday. An upper level short wave should kick things into our area on Thursday which will provide us with the best rain chances. That kicker brings another cold air shot to Central Alabama on Friday with afternoon highs falling back in the lower 50s.

Right now Saturday looks dry with fairly typical temperature readings for January.

Voodoo country looks somewhat wet for Central Alabama. The GFS is suggesting that the overall pattern will remain fairly active and progressive with a series of strong short waves passing over the area. This keeps rain as a possibility every couple of days. But the pattern is not highly amplified, so there is no sign of any extreme cold for the moment. But it is voodoo.

I’m off to the Doubletree Hotel in the UAB area this morning for a weekend workshop on digital photography from the Rocky Mountain School of Photography. I love taking pictures and it is a wonderful opportunity to be able to learn more about photography. Godspeed.
