Snowband Intensifying South of the I-59 Corridor

| January 16, 2018 @ 7:37 pm

RADAR CHECK AT 7:05 PM
Snow continues to move eastward across North and Central Alabama, as travel issues are now occurring as far south as Chilton County. The heaviest band of snow stretches from Wedowee and Roanoke, back to the southwest through Alexander City and Rockford, and back to Selma and Orrville. A secondary band of enhanced snowfall stretches from Piedmont to Pell City to Brent to Linden. Icy conditions will continue to multiply across Central Alabama with this enhanced snowfall, and many reports are coming in from these affected areas of icy roads and accidents.

Behind those two leading bands of snow, light snow showers and flurries continue to fall as far north as Huntsville to Moulton to Hamilton to Sulligent. Anything that falls at this point will add to the accumulation totals, which would add to any travel issues. Be aware that icy roadways are taking shape for many locations in Central Alabama per emergency management. Flash freezing is now occurring, as compaction of snow is resulting in near-immediate ice formation on roadways and other harder surfaces. Please slow down if traveling, or stay off the roads!

Icy roadways are now being reported in Chilton and Calhoun counties. These can just be added to a long list of counties across North and Central Alabama that are experiencing iced-over roads. All roads in Bibb, Fayette, and Colbert counties have been deemed impassible.

In Jefferson County, ice has formed at the intersection of Rocky Ridge Road and Wisteria Drive in Hoover and is being barricaded off. Cars are also sliding off of the road on Hugh Daniels Drive.

All roads in Jacksonville have been closed.

Roads are icing over in the Quail Ridge neighborhood in Helena.
