Rain and Storms at Times

| March 10, 2018 @ 1:20 pm

Early this afternoon we are watching a band of showers and storms over North/Central Alabama. None of these storms are severe and we are not expecting any severe storms today in Alabama. This main rain and storm activity is impacting the counties of Fayette, Walker, Winston, Lamar, Cullman, Blount, and Etowah, surrounding locations and gradually drifting off to the southeast.

Temperatures are cooler where it is raining with 50s and 60s, but the rest of Alabama is seeing upper 60s and lower 70s.

Through the rest of the afternoon, clouds will continue to increase across the state and rain becomes widespread tonight as a surface low moves over North Alabama.

To our west today, the SPC has portions of the Mississippi Valley highlighted in a “slight risk” for severe storms with a “marginal risk” clipping portions of West Alabama, mainly in Pickens, Greene, Sumter, and Choctaw counties.

For these counties, this risk would be for the overnight hours, but we don’t expect any severe storms in Alabama as the storms will be weakening due to lack of instability during the predawn hours. We will be watching radar trends overnight, and any storms which make it Alabama could have gusty winds. Storms or not, a soaking rain is expected and over the next 24 hours, rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with some locations receiving more.

SUNDAY: Tomorrow will start off wet, but the rain and storms should taper off through the morning hours, and we only expect isolated lingering showers tomorrow afternoon. Highs tomorrow will be in the mid 60s. Severe storms are not expected over North/Central Alabama tomorrow, just the soaking rain, but portions of South Alabama are highlighted in a “marginal risk” but this is for areas south of a line from Thomasville, to Greenville to Troy, with damaging wind gusts the main concern.
