Storms Affecting the Birmingham Metro/Tuscaloosa

| March 19, 2018 @ 9:17 pm

Storms have popped up around the Birmingham Metro area.

The storms are not severe at this time, but they are in an environment that could produce severe weather at any time.

There is plenty of instability and bulk shear. Fortunately, the low-level helicity is weakening, so perhaps we will avoid tornadoes.

In addition, the inversion is kicking in over Birmingham, which will help squelch the storms until an approaching boundary helps fire the storms over Jefferson and Blount counties.

But be alert for lightning, heavy rains, gusty winds.

LATE NOTE
A large, potentially violent tornado has struck Jacksonville in Calhoun County. There are reports that Alabama State Troopers say it is a “war zone”.

This tornado is passing into Georgia near Tallapoosa, Waco and Bremen.
